The Haunting of La Llorona is a horror film that draws inspiration from the Mexican folklore of La Llorona, a ghostly figure known as “The Weeping Woman.” According to legend, La Llorona is the spirit of a woman who drowned her children in a fit of rage or sorrow, and now, doomed to an eternity of mourning, she roams rivers and lakes, weeping and searching for the souls of her lost children. Anyone who hears her cries is said to be cursed or in danger of being taken by her.

There are multiple films based on La Llorona, but The Haunting of La Llorona (2019) is one of the lesser-known adaptations. This particular version follows the story of a family that moves into a new home, only to find themselves haunted by the terrifying presence of La Llorona. The film plays on the classic elements of supernatural horror—dark apparitions, eerie noises, and disturbing hauntings as La Llorona terrorizes the family, especially the children.

This version of La Llorona’s tale takes a more traditional approach to the folklore, combining jump scares with the psychological fear of a relentless, ghostly figure tied to tragic and unsettling origins.
