Tesla Roadster to feature jet-style yoke steering and ‘rocket-y stuff’

*Flying* to a dealership near you?

The incoming Tesla Roadster will be the fastest accelerating production car ever built… when it’s eventually built. Last month Elon Musk claimed the long-awaited electric hypercar – a car initially revealed more than six years ago – would accelerate from 0-60mph in under one second. This much you know.

What you don’t know is that the incoming Tesla Roadster will feature technology reserved for things that are designed to be shot into space, because it’ll be a collaboration between Musk’s Tesla and Space X companies. The latter famous for… building spaceships.

Speaking to US journalist Don Lemon, Musk said: “You can expect some rocket-y stuff there.” A flying car, Lemon asked? “Maybe,” said Musk.

“It’s not out of the question. It’s going to be really cool. It’s going to have some rocket technology in it. The only way to do something that’s cooler than the Cybertruck is to combine Space X and Tesla technology to create something that’s not even really a car,” he added.

He went on to confirm the acceleration is “not even the most exciting thing about it”, adding that it’ll get a drive-by-wire yoke steering setup, “like the way aircraft and modern jets are controlled”.

It won’t have big wings, “because big wings would be unwieldy on the road”, and nor will it have propellers, Musk said responding to Lemon’s questions. “I don’t think anyone will ever make anything like the Roadster,” he said.
